Traugott Grundmann bought this Hebmüller in the mid eighties in the Netherlands. The car was already painted in black/yellow, but he didn´t finished the restoration. On several weekends, Traugott drove to the Netherlands and picked up the restored car parts. With this trick he tried to prevent custom duties. On the last trip he picked up the naked body of the car. Traugotts young son Christian was also in his car. When they reached the dutch border, Traugott told the customs officer, that this car is a cheap rebuilt VW beetle body. Christian heard that from the back seat and shouted loud: "this is a rare Hebmüller convertible"! The customs officer said: "It´s better when you drive now". Very funny story!!! In 1988 Traugott sold the car to Ray van Giesen in the USA. (CM)
Ray Van Giesen had bought several Hebmüllers in the past. Most of them he bought in Germany as he was a Military Service man. He also was buying Kubelwagens and Bugatti's. Unclear when it was sold but in the 90's it came in hands of Darryl Adams from Florida. The car was then advertised in Hot vw's to be sold to VW USA. (PS)
