History

Heres the owners own story:  "Heb - 296 is the first of 2 Typ 14 “Hebs” Owned by me (Pete Banholzer) of Fairfax, Virginia, USA. It has chassis number 1 - 0126 870, and was finished on December 13, 1949. It was sold through MAHAG VW Of Munich, Germany. I bought Heb - 296 in July, 1965 from Raymond J. Van Giesen who shipped her back from his US Army post in Germany. 296 was the first of 6 “VW Hebs” owned by Ray, & it was previously driven by his wife Susan. In August, 1965, Heb - 296 was torn down at the body shop of HB Lantzsch VW where I worked as “Sales manager” for 30 years. But the project was sidelined in 1968 when I got another Heb (# 350) in better condition as a trade - in. I finished that one first with the best parts from these 2 original Hebs. I painted # 350 Yukon Yellow & drove her for 10 years before selling her in 1985, while 296 was sent to a barn in Manassas, Virginia. In 2017, I shipped the 296 project in parts to Ruud De Ruiter Of “RR Classics” of the Netherlands, and it is now expertly rebuilt with those original parts plus original and donor panels where needed. The interior was stitched as original by Wagenmanufaktur of Hessisch Oldendorf. I have waited 55 years to drive Heb - 296 again, & I have restored it as an 85th birthday present to myself. I´ve lived a long time and seen thousands of cars, but Heb - 296 is the nicest car I have ever owned." (SD)
